I was thinking we could continue to discuss the world cup here.

Well, that was the thought anyway...

I'm afraid I'm about the belatedly hit the sack, although this thread is probably overdue with the constant temptation to hijack every discussion with the emotional rollercoaster. Maybe though, it should be filed under Religion.

G'night Einherjar,

must find that Serbian penalty on youtube sometime.

Go USA!!!

If US advancement can mean that Americans open their eyes to football, I now officiall am a "fan"!

After watching the Superbowl and seeing how Americans embrace a "sport" where there is a stop in the game every 5 minutes (how can you people watch that, considering that on US tv there are commercials every other minute??), and the so called sportsmen take a rest and a drink after each little run, I really hope that Americans open their eyes gradually to the superior art of real football, where people actually have to move for 45 min a time Smile

So go USA! Algeria should be a win!

Not a chance.

It'll be forgotten by August.

Four year cycles is simply too long. Not enough goals scored is another. Get rid of the offsides penalty and maybe we can talk about Americans becoming fans.

Halftime, South Africa leads 2-0 over 10 man strong France (absurd red card, but SA is still crushing France, so there is no excuse). Great game!

Offside taken away? That would destroy a very important aspect of the game, and take away an important aspect of good defending (to set the line, which is what well organised teams are really good at). Without offside, teams could have two players right in front of the keeper, and behind the defencive line, it would never work and football would become bingo and thus very boring.

Now, back to watch the humiliation of the Les Miserables Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

US and England both win 1-0.

I could almost become a conspiracy theorist, though. In its last two games, the US has had two goals disallowed that were good goals.

But now we see who plays who in the knockout round. The US has to play better defense in the opening minutes.

That Algeria game was almost like watching rugby - almost as much blood (not really, but it was a full collision game). No quarter asked or given.

Italy are out (sigh)

You know what this means?

I don't have to emigrate. My English son is staying with us, and my husband is Italian. I was dreading the possibility that England and Italy might find themselves facing one another.

Turmoil in the ME would have nothng on it believe me Rolling Eyes

I can sleep easy Smile Smile Smile Smile although of course when my husband gets back from his travels tomorrow night he's going ot be pretty low. The whole country goes into mourning when they are out (I'm not joking). But he'll get over it Smile

Italians are not the only ones in mourning now that Italy is out. My son-in-law is a big Italy fan. He has been staying at my house with my daughter and their new-born son since they came home from the hospital.

I suggested he sleep at his parent's house tonight Laughing

But when the US goal against Algeria was not disallowed, there was a collective shout in the US at our TV sets. It was perhaps the only positive news of the entire week for us.

US is Out.

Ghana was to big, too strong, too fast. At least an average of an inch taller and 10 pounds of muscle more. And the US looked slow.

Mandela asked his team to win the last game and they did, because he is Mandela and he means hope and it is wrong disappinting a man who was about three decades in prison for what is SA today. I heard that Sarkozy and the president of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar'adua tried their charms that did not work. I guess it was a test of Charisma Smile

YEAH, Ghana lost and I was crying with the men who cried. They didn't fail Africa though, they were so good all the way. I have no way but to watch the games because my husband does, but to make it intgeresting I usually back the team he doesn't Smile

He wants Sapin for the winner, I want Holand. I guess because of the flowers Holand has, or because of Tsedek Smile

I would support Argentina, but my dear Maradona is obsessed with Ahmadinejad, so this time I want Holand to win.

My Goodness, how the best of fooball stars become kids like politicians when it comes to rivalry, i dislike all what is going on between Pele and Maradona, I remember my days back in kindergarten.

Holland looks really good. But I haven't seen Germany play. I would not count out Uruguay, though. I didn't think they gave anything away to Ghana. And Ghana was nobody easy - so big, so fast, so strong - but too tired to make a penalty kick when it counted.

I'm going to be traveling so I'll likely miss the balance of the tournament after tomorrow.

The all conquering Germans do it again, Maradonna goes home empty handed. 4-0 Argentina crumbled even more comprehensively than we did, not that I'm bitter or anything.
No shame in going out to the best team in the world though, get in there Germany Very Happy

I am really sorry (I am!) to burst your bubble, but allthough England played more agressivly than Argentina, England was still crap and a huge dissapointment in this World Cup. I doubt England would have beaten Argentina this world cup, to put it mildly. Sad with that flop against Algeria, since England could perhaps have made it to the quorterfinals had they not faced a real team like Germany. I told you before, and don`t get annoyed please, but the truth is (gradually, also the English "scream that we are favorites to win allthough we have never come close since winning on a handball in 66" press have realised that while England has top class players, they have no team, and this is comming from someone who absolutely loves to watch the brilliant Premier league. Unfortunatly, the same league also obstructs the development of young english players which is why Holland, Germany and Brazil,(well, luckilly Italy went out with a bang now) all countries with superior talent academies, always will be better team-wise than England unless England changes something drastically. I feel sorry for you English though, since your press makes it hard for you to have rational expectations.

But yes, there is a great consolation for all us football lovers (barring not insignificant millions) that the south americans and the south Europeans with their dive and cheat culture went out in a proper teutonic fashion Razz I mean, I almost cried last World Cup when...super destructive Italy won. Time for Deutche revenge!

Go Germany! May we have Germany-Holland in the finals!

May Excellent organisation, Balanced and hardworking Defending, as well as Blitzkrieg win it for Deutschland!!! Germany are soooooooo nice to watch Smile

Oh fully understand we fucking suck at football, I'm just glad that in the great scheme of things, Fate, Fortune, whatever; has given us a score which at first glance makes us look better than Argentina Laughing, God is truely an Englishman, praise be and go go Germany.

Definitely, nothing worse than a smart-arse cephalopod, it won't be looking so damn smug if it manages to predict its own life expectancy; Germany lose, and now everybody is shit apart from the Dutch and the Spanish. I'm waiting for the news of thousands of angry Germans descending on Oberhausen with forks at the ready for some payback, nobody likes the truth teller.

Hehe, yeah, I hear poor Paul is not popular these days... Laughing

Frankly speaking, my mother sent me an msm after the semi final, saying "at least Paul was right again...", and for some reason, I have yet to answer her.

Truly, Spain is the best team in world cup. They were after all, favourites before it all began, allthough Germany was a very positive surprise and I would be a nasty and most pathetic liar if I claimed I hoped Spain would win.

After seeing the game though, 8 facts arose. 1) Germany got played so low that when they actually got the ball from the nefarious Spaniards, the road up was just too far. 2) Spain played extremly agressivly in the defence and denied any counter-play most effectivly. 4) Playing against a team that manages such a bizzare ammount of possession must surely be demoralising and affect teams psychologically. 5) This is the best game by Spain this tournament by faaaaaaar. 6) Spain was just too good, almost like the EURO final two years ago (I actually think that Spain is better defencivly now than, then, which is omnious).. 7) The Netherlands might yet win, and Spain might have a less stunning day than they had against my favorite W-Cup team. Cool I am biased, though I desperatly try not to be too biased...

It's been a long day and I wanted to know who won before turning in, but it looks like it's not to be. Yikes, a shriek from the neighbours! Obviously that goal and it's over. Tell me tomorrow who scored it! Enjoy your evening football fans!
